What Axis is

Axis is a Swedish manufacturer, now part of Canon, and it built the first network camera in 1996 — effectively creating the category the entire industry now works in.

Three things keep it at the top of most specifications. Image quality in difficult conditions: low light, high contrast, and scenes with both at once, which describes most real sites. Edge analytics: processing that runs on the camera rather than a server, through the ACAP application platform. And device security: signed firmware, secure boot and a public vulnerability disclosure practice that most of the industry still doesn’t match.

That last point matters more than it sounds. Networked cameras are among the most commonly exploited devices on corporate networks, and camera choice is a cybersecurity decision as much as an image quality one.

SpecificationCameras selected against the actual environment. Lighting, weather, mounting constraints, network capacity and retention requirements all change the answer, and a camera that’s right on one site is wrong 200 metres away.

VMS integrationDeployed on Milestone XProtect or Nx Witness depending on the estate. We’re camera-agnostic and platform-agnostic, and the two decisions are made separately.

Firmware governanceControlled firmware upgrades across the camera estate, aligned to Axis’s support lifecycle. An unpatched camera is an open door on the network.
