What iLOQ is

iLOQ is a Finnish manufacturer that solved a specific problem: how to put electronic access control on a lock that has no power and no realistic way to get any.

The answer is that the key supplies the power. Inserting the key generates the energy the lock needs to read the credential, check the permission and record the event — or, on the mobile range, a smartphone’s NFC field does the same job. There is no battery in the lock to replace, and no cable to run to it.

That removes the largest cost in extending access control: getting power and data to the door. Which changes which doors are worth controlling — usually by a wide margin. Across Europe it is heavily deployed in utilities, telecommunications and critical infrastructure, precisely because those estates are full of assets that matter and have no power.
