What XProtect is

Milestone Systems is a Danish company, now part of Canon, and XProtect is among the most widely deployed video management platforms in the world.

Its defining characteristic is openness. XProtect supports an unusually broad range of third-party cameras and devices, and its integration framework means it tends to be the platform video ends up on when an organisation needs video to talk to something else — access control, ANPR, analytics, building systems.

It scales across editions from single-site installations to distributed, federated architectures spanning hundreds of servers, which makes it a common answer for organisations that expect their estate to grow.

What we do with it

Design and architectureServer, storage and retention design sized against the actual requirement rather than a default. Retention is the single largest cost driver in any VMS deployment and the one most often specified by guesswork.

Access control integrationConnecting XProtect to Gallagher so video and access events sit in one operational view. At Auckland Transport we linked the two platforms to drive bollard control and Automatic Number Plate Recognition.

Analytics configurationDetection rules tuned to the site so the system produces actionable alerts rather than noise. Analytics that generate constant false positives get switched off within a month, which makes them worse than nothing.

Health monitoringCamera status, recording continuity and storage capacity tracked continuously, so a failed camera is identified the day it fails rather than the day footage is needed.

Version governanceControlled XProtect upgrades aligned to Milestone’s support lifecycle. Networked video devices are among the most commonly exploited on any corporate network, and an unpatched VMS is exposure.
